I am sorry to say that I am so busy at the time with my day job and my activities as a jazz percussionist that I have too little time to continue posting on this blog for a while.
There definitely will be a Cal Tjader discography made available, either on my own website or a well known jazz discography site, but this will take some more time.
Until then, please be patient ...Mike Weilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10159950540257351952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7414872213896246338.post-73206332071216446152011-02-15T23:49:00.002+01:002011-02-16T11:38:58.614+01:00The Dave Brubeck Trio ctd.<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">Session 1950-01

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">The six tracks recorded in March 1950 were the very first (10 inch) LP released on the Fantasy label. Tjader had bought his first set of vibes only weeks before the session and was entirely self-taught, but Brubeck encouraged him to bring it along. Listen to Lullaby In Rhythm - the way they phrase the melody line on top of Crotty's walking bass ist unique. Body And Soul has Tjader on bongos - the head could need a bit of tightening, but on the other side it allows some pitch bending you couldn't do on a properly tuned Cuban bongo. This trio had its own unique way of appoaching standards.
Tjader was invited to join Shearing's quintet in late 1952 and accepted - a wise choice, as this group toured nationally and gave him his first major exposure. When he decided to stay behind in California in March, 1954 he had already made a name for himself as one of the new vibes stars in jazz and led his first recording sessions for Savoy and Fantasy.
<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">The Shearing sides with Tjader never were reissued on CD, as far as I know, except for a few single tracks on compilations, but would deserve it - they are very diversified, ranging from sophisticated ballads to Afro-Cuban romps with percussion. Al McKibbon was the bassist at that time. Armando Peraza joined the quintet for a few numbers with Cuban rhythms in each set. It was probably during a stay in New York that they took him to the Palladium, reinforcing his love for Cuban music.

<span style="font-family: "Arial", "Helvetica", sans-serif;">With Shearing the jazz scene has lost one of its last iconic figures from the bop era - R.I.P., and thanks for the music.

R.I.P. - herzlichen Dank für die viele wunderbare Musik. Mike Weilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10159950540257351952noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7414872213896246338.post-50606160726364874812011-02-13T18:01:00.007+01:002011-02-14T23:50:01.671+01:00The Dave Brubeck Trio
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Session 1949-03

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">- Dave Brubeck Trio -: Dave Brubeck<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> (piano) Ron Crotty (bass) Cal Tjader (drums)

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Sound Recorders,<span style="font-family: "MS Sans Serif", sans-serif;"> <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">San Francisco, California, September 1949

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">For a working band, the Dave Brubeck Octet was too costly. A piano trio was the practical solution, Tjader still on drums exclusively. The session was held using a new brand of tape recorder, one of the latest inventions back then, but it kept malfunctioning - thirty minutes before closing time the engineers gave in and switched back to old falshioned disc reocorders, which meant the trio had to record the four tracks scheduled under enormous strain - one take only for each piece. The rest is history. The results were fine, and the Weiss brothers, who ran the studio and pressing plant, later bought the masters from the small but unsuccessful Coronet label and used them and the next recordings of the trio as starting point for their own Fantasy label.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The trio already displayed some of the features Brubeck later became notorious for, especially ununsual arrangements and rhythmic ideas - Tjader sure had his part in developping these. His own arrangements in the years to come lean towards a similar direction. You will never hear a more original arrangement of Blue Moon or Tea For Two ... unusual chord substitutions abound, inspired by Brubeck's studies with Milhaud.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">These tracks have seen numerous reissues over the years, from 78 rpm shellac records to 45 rpm singles, EPs, ten inch and 12 inch LPs to CDs - the one linked below has the complete recordings of the trio.

Mike Weilhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10159950540257351952noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7414872213896246338.post-53708502558241647412011-02-11T01:36:00.005+01:002011-02-12T16:21:30.875+01:00Charles "Baron" Mingus Presents His Symphonic Airs
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Session 1949-01

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Charles "Baron" Mingus Presents His Symphonic Airs:<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> John Coppola, Vernon Carlson, Allen Smith, Andy Peele, Dick Collins (trumpet) Haig Eshow, Bob Lowry, possibly Hawes Coleman (trombone) Dante Perfumo (flute) Bob Olney (alto saxophone, clarinet, flute) Bud Hoven (alto saxophone) Morrie Stewart, Alex Megyesy, Don Smith (tenor saxophone) Herb Caro (baritone saxophone) Richard Wyands (piano) <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Charles Mingus<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;"> (bass, arranger) Jean McGuire-Mitchell (cello) Cal Tjader (drums) Johnny Berger (percussion) Herb Gayle (vocals -1)

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">San Francisco, California, mid-February 1949

Anyway, Mingus had Tjader drumming on one of his ambitious orchestral sessions. Richard Wyands, whom Tjader engaged on some of his first sessions as a leader, played piano. Tjader at age 24 was closely connected to the more progressive branches of the California jazz scene.
<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">These two tracks were issued on an extremely rare 78 rpm record and first reissued on the fantastic Uptown CD depicted here. The producers took every effort to compile and restore Mingus' rare Californian recordings. Reward them by avoiding all other issues, which may be cheaper, but are rip-offs taking advantage of their work - you are rewarded with an 80-page booklet and, of course, some fascinating music by one of the greatest jazz composers. Unfortunately, the recording of Mingus' almost mythical piece God's Portrait no longer exists.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">Cal Tjader made his recording debut as a drummer, in 1948 - not in 1946, as the credits of the Fantasy LPs and CDs suggest, and the entries in all discographies. <span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">In a down beat interview in 1966, Tjader stated he joined the Dave Brubeck Octet in 1948 and Joe Dodge was the drummer before him.

<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">The Brubeck Octet was more or less an experimental rehearsal band founded to merge jazz with the compositional methods several members had learned during their studies with French composer Darius Milhaud at UCLA. Milhaud was seriously interested in jazz and Latin American music and wrote several works reflecting this, the most famous perhaps being his ballett score La Création du monde<span style="font-family: "Trebuchet MS", sans-serif;">.

One of my activities over the last years was researching the discography of vibraphonist Cal Tjader, who is one of my favourite jazz musicians. I decided to start this blog to present and discuss his recordings session by session, as an introduction to his music and to publish some discographical findings. You will find all posts in English all well as German language.

My sincere thanks to S. Duncan Reid, author of a biography on Cal Tjader, whose interviews with musicians were of indispensable help in clearing many details.
